TingaTinga (African Art post 1/10)

Tinga tinga is an art movement coming from Tanzania; it was established in 1990 by Edward Tingatinga’s relatives.
The original artist is Edward tinga tinga who born in South Tanzania in 1936, and started to paint in 1968 where his paintings became famous among Tanzanians, but his career didn't last long as Edward died back in 1972, yet his works are famous all around Tanzania, as the popular style is spread all over now as tourists finds this style creative whereas he chose 6 relatives to continue on his works as he used to teach them as his students.

Edward has thought his students his style, where he generally painted a single animal on a colourful background where decorations of landscapes, plants or birds were rare to see. They are painted in a simplified way just to keep their symbol, he even used to paint in a non-uniform way where the colours and shapes do not match to the animal represented and their shape is generally simplified further till all the details won’t be visible any more  The shape of body parts was further simplified so no details are shown

Tinga tinga’s paintings are all painted with enamel colours where this is their trade mark for their work, if one doesn’t know what enamel colours are, outdoor home stuff (windows, doors etc.) might be painted with these paints, as one can see their art is made out of industrial colours.

Tinga Tinga refers to art, but much of their production are handcrafted items such as reproduced paintings and other products which are made for international sales, such items includes glass, pencils, hand painted plates and other decorative objects.
Their art is made out of one type, which are the repetitive DOTS. They are used in almost all paintings. Their paintings usually consists various nature subjects, but the Guinea Fowl is the most popular amongst them all, as it consists a lot of dots on its feathers. They even used to paint a black border as one of their objectives, but today it’s not really a necessary.
